I never knew that Westerners could not do the Asian squat. Not long after I moved to the US, hubby was commenting about that and he demonstrated that he could not do it. I was laughing so hard because for Asians, the squat is as natural as breathing.
In Asian squat, your feet are flushed to the ground and your thighs are pependicular to the floor.

It is quite a relaxing stance and some people can squat for a long time without getting tired.
In a Western squat, you are on the balls of your feet and your thighs are parallel to the floor. In this stance, you get tired easily.

Why is it that Westerners could not do the Asian squat? Maybe it is because Western countries do that have this type of toilet bowl.

I never thought of that !!! I must get my Western friends to try it...and my Asian friends who have migrated to US for a long time!
Yes,my hubby also surprise that I can squat..I guess you're right they don't have that special toilet like we have in Asia
My hubby said it's Kimchi Squat... He used to live in Korea for 2 years many years ago and found most Korean girls can do kimchi squat...
Both my girls can do asian squat too.. Can Oliver do so..??
hahahaha yes asian squats take years of practice to perfection...in the toilets!
Interesting topic, Hooi imm.
Wuching is right that the Asian squat takes practice. The angle at which the ankle is bent is far larger than the western squat. If the westerners try our squat, they are likely to fall backwards. :)
I just started physical therapy on my broken foot and the therapist was somewhat amazed at the flexibility of my uninvolved foot. I did not see the connection until I read this post. I will ask him to do the Asian squat tomorrow. Haha!
Haha, I laughed at Rit's comments!
Hooi Imm, I don't if my kids can go poo on that squatting toilet!! We will be going to the longhouse in June, and now I am thinking I might have to get a couple of large chamber pots! haha.
Doug can't do the Asian squat either and I can imagine how awkward it must have been for him to squat when he had to use the toilet at the longhouse!
Haha, in 2006, I installed a sitting toilet in our downstairs bathroom. There was only a squatting toilet downstairs, so when the contractor came to install the toilet, my father told the contractor, "Itu orang putih tidak pandai pangsai pakai jamban bukan dudok!" Haha!
ann - I think once you can do the squat, you can do it for life. :-)
beachlover - hubby never seen it until he went to M'sia.
cat - Olivia only did it for a few seconds when she squat down to play with her toys.
wuching - haha...that's right.
rita - let me know if your therapist can do the squat.hehe
puteri - you have to let me start practising now...lol
