Remember in Malaysia, our mothers used to “ssshhh sssshhh” an infant over the sink or potty and the baby will pee or “mmmm mmmmm” to poo. Before the invention of disposable diapers, that how it is done and babies are toilet trained at a young age. 1. The parent take care of the baby for the first 1 – 2 years. According to this book, by the age of 2, you baby would be completely toilet trained.
Here, in the US, mothers do not start toilet training babies/toddlers until they are between 18 months - 2 years old.
I recently began reading the book Infant Potty Training by Laurie Boucke. The book said that infants actually has control over the muscles to pee or poo, and at a very young age, they try to communicate with us as to the timing of their elimination. The earlier we trained them to control the muscles, the earlier they can be toilet trained.
The ideal age to start is between 4-6 months, note that it’s INFANT potty training, not Toddler. This method works best if:
2. There is a reliable helper or nanny who would take over the potty training if you're not with your baby.
This method is widely used in Asia. For expectant mothers, you might like to check out this book. As for Olivia, since she is already 9.5 months old, I'll toilet train her when she is ready.

Hooi Imm,
My mom told me she infant toilet trained all me, my sisters and my brother when we were just like a few months old.
By the time we were between 2 or 3, we were all out of diapers.
Give it a try with Olivia. It might works well for her.
Emma, my youngest just turned 2 last weekend, and she has started using potty a month ago. She did pretty well at school and at home too.
My boy was very late when it comes to potty train.
I bought him all kind of nice potties but he was not ready.
Once he was ready, the training only took 2 days for pee and 2 weeks for poo. Never have any accident in school, church or outing. He just tell you when he needs to go.
I used to worry too much. Worry he cannot walk, send him to see occupation therapy, worry he cannot talk send him to see speech therapy, now, I come to a conclusion that if he is ready he is ready. Kids have their time table. Now I am a firm believer of they are the boss when it comes to their bodies :).
Cat, when did you start potty training Emma?
Jamy, you're right. When they are ready, they will do it. But as mothers, we tend to worry about everything. Since I'm a worry wart, lagi teruk.
Hi Hooi Imm :)
Got ur link from cat cat's blog.
I'd like to try to potty train my son who is one year now.
I enjoy your blog!very informative..
Hooi Imm,
We started Emma potty training about a month or so ago. She is doing pretty well. Been going to potty at school, according to the teacher.
She is also out of the bottle, using sippy cup completely. She refused to take bottle and wanted sippy cup just like her sister.
Emma's development is much faster than Annabel. I guess it's easier for her as she has older sister to follow. She started saying "I love you too" when she was only 18 months. Hard to believe but true.
Hi Pat, thanks for dropping by. Will be checking out your blog.
I'm a lazy mommy so I didn't potty trained mine till recently. It was easier for me to change her than look for a public toilet everytime we go out. :p
Denice had a fear of the toilet, refused to sit on it .. little potty or not. But between her and Duncan she was potty trained earlier, at almost 4 years old! Heheh.
Duncan was also completely off diapers at age 4. That is the latest they will be trained. But at night I put diapers on them, don't want them to wet the bed. They both refused to get out of bed during the night. But when it is morning and he is awake, Duncan will use the toilet. Denice won't until you tell her to. :-( So just when you think they are completely off diapers, you still need some back up plan!
